The Church of St Vitus stands beside the Capuchin monastery, south of Varaždin’s historic core. Tradition associates its existence as a parish church with the 13th century, while its present appearance dates from 1779, after an earlier building was destroyed in a major fire. A cemetery once surrounded the church and extended into its crypt; the final burial there took place in 1839. The church is entered in Croatia’s Register of Cultural Goods as Z-2267. It makes an especially interesting stop on a walk between Kapucinski Square and the old town, combining sacred architecture with the traces of the city’s former burial ground.
