The Ursulines arrived in Varaždin in the early 18th century, and their convent with the Church of the Nativity became an important part of the city’s religious and educational history. The sisters introduced schooling for girls, giving the complex significance beyond its architecture alone. The church is Baroque in character, while its slender tower forms one of the recognizable vertical accents of the historic centre. The complex lies close to the main pedestrian streets and can easily be combined with the cathedral and nearby palaces. It is especially worthwhile for visitors interested in the links between monastic life, education and the Baroque development of Varaždin.
