About this place

Visoko is a hilly settlement in southern Varaždin County, between the Kalnik area and the road corridors leading towards Novi Marof and Zagreb. Its defining landmark is Holy Trinity parish church, recorded in the Zagreb Diocese’s list of parishes in 1334. Gothic details survive beneath later Baroque alterations, while the fortified-looking tower carries an unusual octagonal stone-pyramid roof. A few kilometres away, archaeological remains of Čanjevo fort occupy Ribelj hill above the village of Čanjevo; written sources mention the stronghold in 1598. Since 2005, the site has hosted the Battle for Čanjevo, a living-history event recreating life and warfare on this late-16th-century frontier. Steep local roads, vineyard cottages, wooded slopes and views from the higher ground shape the journey between Visoko and Čanjevo. With its landmarks dispersed across the municipality, Visoko works best as a compact day trip by car or bicycle, linking Holy Trinity Church with the protected manor and the excavated fort at Čanjevo.

Visoko’s centre is marked by Holy Trinity Church, first documented in the Zagreb Diocese’s parish list of 1334. The present building retains Gothic ribs in the sanctuary and partly blocked Gothic windows, although later Baroque work substantially reshaped its interior. Its robust tower, crowned by an uncommon octagonal stone pyramid, is the settlement’s most distinctive architectural feature. The wider municipality unfolds across hills, streams, woods and rows of vineyard cottages towards Čanjevo, where an 18th-century protected manor and the remains of a fort extend the story beyond Visoko itself. Visoko’s particular identity therefore combines medieval parish heritage, the rolling landscape of the Croatian Zagorje fringe and the military history preserved on Ribelj hill.

Things to do

Start by examining the exterior of Holy Trinity Church, particularly the tower’s stone-pyramid roof, surviving Gothic windows and fortified appearance. Continue along the local road to Čanjevo, where an 18th-century protected manor stands within the village. The final stop is Ribelj hill and the archaeological remains of Čanjevo fort, documented in 1598; its elevated position makes the stronghold’s former defensive purpose immediately understandable. During the Battle for Čanjevo festival, historical guards, staged scenes and archery bring the ruins back to life. The 2026 programme also included a recreational bicycle ride from the Visoko municipal offices to the fort, turning the approach itself into part of the event.

Practical information

Getting there and around

The landmarks of Visoko and Čanjevo are scattered across hilly ground, making a car the simplest way to connect Holy Trinity Church, Čanjevo manor and the ascent towards the fort on Ribelj hill. A bicycle offers a more active alternative for confident riders: during the 2026 Battle for Čanjevo programme, a recreational ride ran from the Visoko municipal offices to the fortress. Conditions on the final approach to the archaeological site should be assessed after rain, as the ruins occupy raised ground away from Visoko’s level village centre. Holy Trinity Church can readily be visited on foot once in Visoko, but linking it with Čanjevo is considerably easier with private transport.
