About this place

Satnica Đakovačka lies six kilometres from Đakovo, and its public life is anchored by the parish of St Roch and the old school building. The parish office at Bana Jelačića 3 also serves Gašinci. The neo-Gothic Church of St Roch, built in 1900 through the efforts of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, gives Satnica its most recognisable skyline. The Museum of Đakovština records 200 inhabited houses at the time, including local, German and Hungarian families. Schooling here dates to 1859, when 52 children enrolled in the lower primary school; the present school building followed in 1908. The primary school became independent again on 1 September 2014 after 43 years as a branch school. KUD Sloga, founded in 1996, keeps local folklore alive, including the St John’s Eve bonfire custom on 24 June.

Satnica Đakovačka is the administrative centre of the municipality of the same name in the Đakovo area, while the parish of St Roch is based at Bana Jelačića 3. St Roch remains a defining date in the local calendar, with the parish feast celebrated on 16 August. The 2011 census recorded 2,123 residents in Satnica Đakovačka, compared with 2,002 in 2001. The village’s present-day identity is therefore shaped both by municipal administration based here and by the parish, whose pastoral area also includes Gašinci.

Things to do

Make the neo-Gothic Church of St Roch the focus of a walk through Satnica Đakovačka. Built in 1900 through the efforts of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer and restored in 1999, it is the settlement’s clearest architectural landmark. Then look for the statue of St Florian, listed alongside the parish church among local sights in municipal planning material. Much older layers survive at the Katinska–Gradac and Šarviz archaeological sites: the former is prehistoric, while Šarviz preserves evidence spanning prehistoric, Roman and medieval periods. Satnica’s living traditions are represented by KUD Sloga, founded in 1996 to maintain Slavonian songs, dances, costumes and customs and known for appearing at the Đakovački vezovi folklore festival.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Satnica Đakovačka is reached by road, as the municipality has no railway infrastructure. The principal approach is the D515, which links Đakovo and Našice and runs for 6.2 kilometres through the municipality. County road Ž4129 leads to Gašinci and onwards towards Kondrić, while Ž4128 connects Satnica with Josipovac Punitovački. The nearby Zagreb–Osijek motorway makes the village accessible by car from other parts of Slavonia, although the final approach uses the local road network. Municipal planning documents identify public buses as important to the community, so travellers relying on them should consult the operator’s current timetable before departure.
