St. Bartholomew's Church in Novi Mikanovci

church building in Stari Mikanovci, Croatia

About

St Bartholomew’s Church in Novi Mikanovci dates from the 13th century and is one of eastern Croatia’s rare surviving medieval churches. Romanesque in origin, it combines a cylindrical tower with a Gothic polygonal sanctuary supported by buttresses; the tower’s distinctly leaning form is its most striking feature. The building was given Baroque alterations in 1731, yet its earlier architectural layers still define its character. It stands beside the cemetery on the southern side of the village and is reached by local streets from the centre of Novi Mikanovci. The parish community marks St Bartholomew’s feast day on 24 August here. It is a rewarding stop for visitors interested in medieval architecture and Slavonian sacred heritage.
