Podgorje, Kaptol
About this place
Podgorje belongs to Kaptol Municipality and sits on the local corridor between Kaptol and Vetovo, below the Papuk slopes on the northern side of the Požega Valley. The village name—literally “below the mountain”—fits its position beneath the wooded uplands, while the road through Podgorje links the municipal centre with nearby wine-growing settlements. The wider area’s principal historic landmark stands in neighbouring Kaptol, where the late Gothic and Renaissance Old Town retains round towers, half-towers and the outline of a moat once supplied by the Bistra stream. In the Middle Ages, the fortified compound contained Saint Peter’s Church, the canons’ living quarters and a central courtyard; after Ottoman rule, the Baroque Church of Saint George was built into its western section. AureaBus route 14 directly connects Podgorje with Požega, Kaptol and Vetovo. In the timetable published for 2026, the journey from Požega bus station to Podgorje takes about half an hour, making it practical to combine the village with Kaptol’s fortress and the vineyards around Vetovo.
Podgorje is one of nine small settlements surrounding Kaptol, below the wooded southern slopes of Papuk. Its Chapel of St Mark provides a modest local landmark, while the village name—literally “below the mountain”—captures its setting particularly well. Extensive forests cover the northern part of Kaptol municipality, roughly half of which lies within Papuk Nature Park. This landscape places Podgorje within the identity of Zlatni Papuk, the shared visitor destination formed by Kaptol, Velika, Brestovac and Jakšić. The nearest strong historical reference point is Kaptol itself, where Iron Age burial mounds and a fortified hilltop settlement reveal the area’s importance during the Hallstatt period.

Things to do
From Podgorje, the most coherent outing continues into Kaptol, where the Warriors’ Route follows the Bistra stream past the Čemernica burial ground and climbs towards the prehistoric settlement at Gradca. A landscaped trail at Kaptol-Gradca now uses interpretation panels and in-situ burial mounds to explain the warrior society that occupied this area in the seventh and sixth centuries BC. Back in Kaptol, the late Gothic and Renaissance fortress adds a very different layer: its irregular hexagonal plan, round towers and traces of a former water-filled moat are still legible. Hikers seeking a longer extension can turn towards Papuk’s forest trails, including the 15-kilometre Pištanska River option leading towards Kokočak.
