Kutjevo Abbey
About
Kutjevo Castle forms part of a historic complex created on the site of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1232. After the Cistercians departed and the Ottoman period ended, the Jesuits cleared the ruins and built a Baroque complex with a church and their residence. The castle is arranged along a corridor with a central dining room, while its tower follows the vertical line of the church bell tower. The complex includes a wine cellar associated with 1232. The Turković family restored the estate in the late 19th century, but a 1918 fire altered the roof and first floor. Both castle and park are protected; the complex is privately owned, so interior access should be arranged in advance.
