About this place

Pila is a small Zagorje settlement on Medvednica’s northern side, within the municipality of Stubičke Toplice and beside one of the nature park’s principal northern road approaches. Here, Sljemenska cesta leaves the inhabited foothills and climbs into the forest, making Pila a natural starting point for the route through Markov travnik towards Sljeme. Trail 43, known as Zagrebački put, rises from the village towards the Hunjka mountain lodge over 3.5 kilometres and gains 630 metres in elevation. Because the route is not officially waymarked on trees, hikers should carry a reliable map or GPS track and wear proper footwear. A gentler visit can focus on the elongated village and its small roadside religious monuments, locally called pile, which give the area a distinctly Stubica character. The official bus route places Pila six kilometres from Stubičke Toplice and fifteen kilometres from Zabok bus station. With only limited local departures, driving is usually the more practical choice, particularly for visitors continuing into the higher parts of Medvednica.

Pila’s identity comes from its position between Stubičke Toplice and Medvednica’s wooded ridge. The village belongs to a municipality whose territory lies roughly 80 percent within Medvednica Nature Park, and the road through Pila forms an important northern approach for visitors arriving from Hrvatsko zagorje. Houses follow the rising road towards Sljeme rather than gathering around a conventional town centre, while streams and forested slopes give the settlement a distinctly mountain-side character. Its modest religious heritage includes the Sacred Heart shrine, one of the small devotional monuments associated with the Stubičke Toplice area. Pila is therefore less a place for museums or monumental architecture than a quiet gateway to the Zagorje face of Medvednica.

Things to do

Begin with a short walk along Sljemenska cesta and Pila’s roadside shrines, then choose a climb suited to your experience. Trail 43, Zagrebački put, runs via Pepelarnica from its junction with trail 39 to the Hunjka lodge; it is 3.5 kilometres long, rated moderately difficult and gains 630 metres. Medvednica Nature Park notes that trail 43 is not marked on trees and has no drinking-water point, so carry both navigation and sufficient water. Another option is the walking corridor from Stubičke Toplice through Pila and Markov travnik towards Sljeme. Cyclists can use county road 2219 as the designated road approach from the Zagorje side towards Medvednica’s ridge.
