Mače
About this place
Mače is the municipal centre in the valleys of the Sutinšćica and Velika streams, on the southern slopes of Ivanščica in central Krapina-Zagorje County. Komor, an older local place-name, was recorded as an independent estate as early as the 13th century. The key heritage site is the parish church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the parish first appears in written records in 1444, the present church dates from 1574, and its bell tower from 1758. Zagreb Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac consecrated the church on 25 July 1822. Beside it stands the old wooden parish house, which the Municipality of Mače identifies as a first-category cultural monument declared in 1965. Together they make a compact starting point for exploring the village, while the Chapel of St Benedict occupies a hilltop above Veliki Komor. Mače is best understood through this blend of Zagorje terrain and a continuous sacred heritage rather than one isolated attraction.
Mače’s recognisable skyline is defined by the parish church of the Immaculate Conception and its 1758 bell tower. Parish records reach back to 1444, while the present church dates from 1574, tying the village centre to almost five centuries of religious history. The old parish house beside it completes the ensemble and underwent structural restoration in 2024. Surrounding hills, vineyards and the proximity of Ivanščica’s southern slopes give Mače a distinctly rural Zagorje character.

Things to do
Start a Mače visit at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1574, and note its 1758 bell tower. Next door, pause at the old wooden parish house, a first-category cultural monument since 1965; after its 2024 restoration, it is again clearly legible as a distinct part of the parish complex. Continue to Veliki Komor and the hilltop Chapel of St Benedict, whose position above the settlement frames a view of the Sutinšćica valley and Ivanščica’s southern slopes. Finish in Poznanovec at the branch church of St John Paul II, identified by the municipality as the first church in the Archdiocese of Zagreb dedicated to that saint.
