About this place

Križ is a historic settlement in Zagreb County whose centre developed around the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, from which the town took its name. The parish appears in written records in 1334, while the medieval church retains Gothic buttresses, Baroque altars and an organ dating from 1787. It occupies the settlement’s highest point inside a park laid out in the late 19th century and associated with Viteslav Durchanek, who also helped shape Zagreb’s Botanical Garden and Lenuci Horseshoe. The protected historic centre includes traditional timber houses and bourgeois villas, making the square and park the natural focus of a short walk. The wider municipality has a strong connection with opera singer Milka Trnina, born in Vezišće in 1863; a memorial room devoted to her has been created in the village cultural centre. Vezišće is also associated with Milkin medenjak, a local gingerbread product inspired by her legacy. Travellers arriving without a car can use Novoselec railway station on the corridor linking Zagreb with Ivanić-Grad, Kutina and Novska. Križ consequently works well as a compact cultural outing combining a medieval church, a historic park and Trnina’s birthplace.

Križ reveals its identity through both its name and the arrangement of its centre: the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross occupies the highest point, with the historic park spreading around it. The settlement is indirectly recorded in a 1334 list of Zagreb Diocese parishes, while its protected core preserves traditional timber buildings and several bourgeois villas. The park was laid out in the late 19th century and is attributed to Viteslav Durchanek, also associated with Zagreb’s Botanical Garden. Vezišće adds another layer to the municipality’s cultural character as the birthplace of Milka Trnina, one of Croatia’s best-known opera singers. This combination of a medieval church, historic landscaping and Trnina’s legacy distinguishes Križ from neighbouring Moslavina settlements.

Things to do

Start in the central park and approach the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, whose exterior still displays Gothic buttresses. Inside, look for the main Holy Cross altar, the side altars dedicated to Saint Roch and Saint Anthony, and the organ built in 1787. After exploring the protected centre, continue to nearby Vezišće, where the Milka Trnina Cultural Centre contains a memorial room for the opera singer born there on 19 December 1863. Her local legacy also inspired Milkin medenjak, a gingerbread speciality created as a distinctive product of the municipality. For an archaeological extension, visit Sipčina near Okešinec, where excavations have identified traces of timber structures dated between the 1st and 7th centuries.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Novoselec station, located on Kolodvorska Street within Križ Municipality, is the most useful rail access point. It lies on the corridor running from Zagreb through Dugo Selo and Ivanić-Grad towards Kutina and Novska; travellers should check HŽPP’s timetable for their precise date. Reaching historic central Križ from Novoselec requires a further local-road connection, making a bicycle, taxi or pre-arranged lift useful for the final stretch. A car simplifies a combined visit to the church and park in Križ, the Milka Trnina Memorial Room in Vezišće and the Sipčina archaeological site near Okešinec. Current parking arrangements and any works around the centre should be checked through municipal notices before arrival.
