Kraljevec na Sutli
About this place
Kraljevec na Sutli is a small municipal centre in western Hrvatsko Zagorje, set 161 metres above sea level and eight kilometres south of Klanjec. Its setting is distinctly local: the borderland around the Sutla valley, where wooded hills, farmland and surviving timber houses shape the scenery. Kraljevec first entered the written record in 1463, in a charter issued by King Matthias Corvinus concerning the Cesargrad estate; “na Sutli” was added to the name in the 19th century to distinguish it from other places called Kraljevec. The village landmark is the parish Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1836 on the site of an earlier chapel. Its late Neoclassical exterior encloses a space rooted in the late Baroque tradition, while the bell tower was modelled on the former tower of Zagreb Cathedral. Inside is a ten-stop mechanical organ made in 1848 by Zagreb organ builder Pavao Pumpp. Kraljevec works best as a quiet Sutla Valley stop, combined with Radakovo, nearby Klanjec or a bicycle ride through the border countryside.
Kraljevec na Sutli takes its identity from the Sutla River, the Slovenian border and its position at the south-western edge of Krapina-Zagorje County. The centre stands at 161 metres, surrounded by cultivated plots, rolling Zagorje hills and scattered clusters of houses. Surviving timber-built “hiže” are a particularly distinctive feature of the municipal landscape. The name Kraljevec was documented in 1463 in a charter that also referred to Cesargrad, Klanjec, Kumrovec and Tuhelj. During the 19th century, “na Sutli” was added to distinguish this village from other Croatian settlements bearing the same name.

Things to do
Begin at the Church of the Holy Trinity beside the main road, built in 1836 over an older masonry chapel. Examine the bell tower, whose design recalls Zagreb Cathedral’s former tower, then look inside for Pavao Pumpp’s ten-stop mechanical organ dating from 1848. Continue through the centre to see where the low Sutla Valley meets the rounded hills characteristic of this corner of Zagorje. Cyclists can extend the visit along the promoted Luka–Klanjec–Kraljevec na Sutli–Dubravica route, which links the village with Klanjec and continues towards neighbouring Zagreb County.
