Novi Dvori of Cesargrad
About
Novi Dvori Cesargradski lies on the plain about five kilometres south of Klanjec. Croatian Ban Toma Erdödy commissioned it in 1603 after the old Cesargrad fortress no longer met his family’s residential needs. The manor is considered Hrvatsko zagorje’s first enclosed-type castle: its wings open through arcades towards an inner courtyard, while its design anticipates the early Baroque. Farm buildings once stood north of the residence, and the estate was divided between two Erdödy family branches in the 18th century. Although the complex is now in ruins, it retains considerable historical importance: Antun Mihanović, author of the Croatian national anthem, died here in 1861.
