About this place

Gornja Bistra occupies the transition between a settled foothill and the wooded northern slopes of Medvednica, bringing Baroque heritage and substantial mountain walks into the same village. Its historic focus is Oršić Castle and the surrounding park in Bolnička Street. Krsto II Oršić commissioned the residence between 1770 and 1773, and the Chapel of St Joseph in one wing was completed in 1774. A 520-metre hornbeam avenue approaches the façade and is described by the municipality as Croatia’s longest. The castle now serves a medical institution rather than operating as a conventional museum, so independent visits centre on its exterior and park. The Bistra Educational Trail begins by the old school, passes the castle and climbs into Medvednica Nature Park; completing its full circuit takes four to seven hours. Marked trails also lead from Gornja Bistra to Činovnička livada and the Grafičar mountain lodge. From Grafičar, walkers can continue to the neo-Gothic Chapel of St James on Veliki Plazur, built in 1847 where an older wooden chapel had burned down.

Gornja Bistra is shaped by Oršić Castle, the Bistra stream and Medvednica’s steep wooded edge. Built between 1770 and 1773 for General Krsto II Oršić Slavetički, the Baroque residence is protected as cultural property Z-1896. Its south-eastern wing contains the Chapel of St Joseph, with painted altars and a small positive organ that is separately recorded as cultural heritage. The park is dominated by a 520-metre approach avenue of hornbeams, while its landscape design retains Baroque elements. Medvednica Nature Park begins above the village, where trails follow the stream, pass an abandoned quarry and climb towards Bistransko sedlo, the Grafičar lodge and the Sljeme ridge. This immediate meeting of castle architecture and Medvednica’s northern slope gives Gornja Bistra its distinct role as a gateway to Bistranska gora.

Things to do

Start at Gornja Bistra’s old school, the trailhead of the Bistra Educational Trail, and walk past Oršić Castle and its long hornbeam avenue. A shorter outing can end near the castle and abandoned quarry, where volcanic rocks are visible, while the complete circuit over the ridge and down towards the Zrinski mine takes four to seven hours. For a defined mountain objective, choose trail 46, which follows the Bistra stream for seven kilometres via Bistransko sedlo to the Grafičar lodge. The 5.9-kilometre trail 42 instead climbs towards the Oštrica forestry lodge and Činovnička livada, opening views over Hrvatsko zagorje. From Grafičar, the Sljeme road provides an onward approach to the 1847 neo-Gothic Chapel of St James on Veliki Plazur.

Practical information

Getting there and around

ZET bus routes 176 and 177 connect Gornja Bistra with Zagreb’s Črnomerec terminal. Route 176 runs via Donja Bistra, whereas route 177 approaches Gornja Bistra through Poljanica; both appear in ZET’s official information for the Bistra fare area. Bistra municipality lies in ZET’s second zone, so tickets must account for travel between Zagreb’s first zone and Bistra’s second. For the Bistra Educational Trail, alight in Gornja Bistra and make for the old school; Oršić Castle is at Bolnička 21. Sljemenska cesta continues from the village towards the northern side of the ski area, but mountain conditions and temporary road restrictions should be checked before driving uphill.
