Dubravica
About this place
Dubravica is a small municipal centre in north-western Zagreb County, positioned between the Sutla plain and the hills of the Marija Gorica uplands. The settlement counted 112 residents in 2021, while the municipality comprises ten villages and reaches Croatia’s border with Slovenia along the Sutla. Its landscape shifts from western farmland to Dubrava Hill and the slopes around Rozga, so the area’s sights are dispersed among several settlements. Poet, priest and Croatian Revival figure Pavao Štoos was born in Dubravica in 1806, and the local branch school now carries his name. The principal ecclesiastical landmark nearby is St Anne’s Church in Rozga, built below Vinsko Hill in 1842 after an earlier church was destroyed by fire. Beside it stands a wooden parish house constructed between 1758 and 1789, distinguished by its veranda and old wine press. The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Luške is older still: an inscription on its holy-water basin dates the building to 1609. Dubravica consequently suits a quiet excursion through the Sutla lowlands, traditional wooden houses and closely spaced historic villages.
Dubravica is not a conventional tourist hub but a base for exploring a compact borderland between the Sutla and the Marija Gorica uplands. The municipality’s west is defined by the river plain and the Ravnice, Sutliše and Skoritna streams, while the ground rises eastward towards Dubrava Hill. Its ten settlements had 1,192 residents in 2021, with Bobovec Rozganski larger than the municipal seat itself. Dubravica’s cultural identity is tied to Pavao Štoos, born here on 10 December 1806, and to traditional wooden “hiže” preserved around the surrounding villages. Rozga, Luške, Lugarski Breg and Merenje contribute churches and chapels, so Dubravica is best understood as a network of small settlements rather than a single concentrated historic centre.

Things to do
Start in Dubravica near the Pavao Štoos branch school, then continue to Rozga, the focal point of the municipality’s religious heritage. There, see St Anne’s Church from 1842 and the wooden parish house built between 1758 and 1789, which retains an old grape press. The next stop is Luške, where the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary bears the date 1609 on its holy-water basin and masonry supports recall repeated structural repairs. A return through Lugarski Breg, Merenje or Bobovec Rozganski reveals smaller chapels and surviving traditional wooden houses. For a more active continuation, follow the Sutla-side area towards Prosinec and Vučilčevo, traversed by the local cycling course used for the St Anne’s Day ride.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Meštrović prijevoz connects Dubravica with Zaprešić railway station on route 404 via Pušća, allowing onward rail travel towards Zagreb. The operator publishes separate schedules for school terms and holidays, so the relevant 2026 departure should be checked for the actual travel date. Route 406 continues from Dubravica towards Klanjec and Kumrovec and connects with route 404, giving the village a link into Hrvatsko Zagorje as well. A car remains useful for reaching dispersed sites such as St Anne’s Church in Rozga, the chapel at Luške and settlements along the Sutla. Cyclists will find the low-lying section towards Prosinec less demanding than the climbs into Dubravica’s eastern hills.
