Dekanovec
About this place
Dekanovec is a small village and municipality in Lower Međimurje, set on a low Pleistocene terrace between Podturen, Domašinec and Belica. Historical records first mention it in 1478, while the present municipality was separated from Domašinec in 1997. The village’s identity is inseparable from Florijan Andrašec, born here in 1888: a folk poet, tune collector, composer, sculptor and long-serving church organist. Working with ethnomusicologist Vinko Žganec, Andrašec helped document Međimurje folk songs and published his collection “Međimurske fijolice” in 1953. His presence remains visible through the monument in the village centre, the street bearing his name and the local primary school, renamed after him in 2018. The parish Church of All Saints stands on the same street, and its main altar was made by Andrašec himself. A crossed clarinet and quill on the municipal coat of arms further underline Dekanovec’s musical and literary character. This is not a village of blockbuster sights, but a rewarding short stop for travellers interested in Kajkavian verse, Međimurje music and the unusually broad legacy of one local artist.
Dekanovec consists of a single settlement and, at roughly six square kilometres, ranks among Croatia’s smallest municipalities by area. Its flat Lower Međimurje landscape rests on layers of gravel, sand, silt, clay and loess. Rather than a formal square, the village’s focal axis is Florijana Andrašeca Street, home to the municipal offices, the All Saints parish and memorials to the local cantor. Andrašec’s clarinet and poet’s quill also appear on the municipal coat of arms, giving Dekanovec a visual identity rooted in a genuine local life story. Beyond writing and composing, he helped establish a choir, tamburica ensemble, brass band, Seljačka sloga branch and volunteer fire brigade, so much of the village’s cultural history can be traced through his work.

Things to do
Begin in central Dekanovec at the monument to Florijan Andrašec, close to the municipal building on the street named after him. Continue a few steps to the All Saints parish church at number 43; its main altar was crafted by Andrašec, linking his sculpture to the church where he served for decades as organist and cantor. His grave in the village cemetery is the next meaningful stop and remains a focal point for official commemorations of his birth and death. Before or after the walk, listen to a Međimurje song associated with his repertoire or seek out his 1953 collection “Međimurske fijolice”; this gives an otherwise compact village route a distinctly musical and Kajkavian thread.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Dekanovec reaches Čakovec via county road ŽC 2018 through Belica, while ŽC 2003—the route known locally as the Mura road—links the village with Podturen, Domašinec, Turčišće and Hodošan. There is no railway station in Dekanovec, so Čakovec is the practical rail interchange. The municipal timetable available in 2026 lists weekday buses from Dekanovec to Čakovec and one Saturday departure during the school term; during school holidays it shows five weekday departures and no Saturday service. The listed journeys to Čakovec take approximately 22 to 61 minutes, depending on the departure. With such limited weekend service, a car or bicycle is more convenient for combining Dekanovec with neighbouring villages in Lower Međimurje.
