About this place

Bektež is a settlement within the Town of Kutjevo, lying on the road corridor between Požega, Kutjevo and Našice in the eastern Požega Valley. The town’s official history places the village on the Požega–Našice route and traces it to the 14th century, when it belonged to the Ilijić, Abramović and Lovrić feudal families. During the 15th century, Bektež was connected with the Gradište estate, then a market settlement with a fortress, while the present form of the village name is associated with the Ottoman period. Croats from other regions arrived after the departure of the Islamised population in the 17th century, and today Bektež is described as a Catholic village with a church. The town’s presentation of the 2021 census gives Bektež 296 residents, making it one of Kutjevo’s 17 settlements. A visit is less about a sequence of formal attractions than about reading a Slavonian village landscape shaped by the historic route towards Gradište. Public transport is available: county bus line 16 in the 2026 timetable links Bektež with Kutjevo, Požega and Gradište, with departures subject to weekday, school-term and seasonal conditions.

Bektež belongs to the Town of Kutjevo and had 296 residents according to the town’s presentation of the 2021 census. Its position on the Požega–Našice road tied it for centuries to nearby estates and trading routes. Records from the 14th century associate the village with the Ilijić, Abramović and Lovrić families, while in the 15th century it belonged to the Gradište estate. Older sources use the form Bekteže, which the town’s history links to the Ottoman period. The Catholic community, village church and location between Kutjevo and Gradište now define Bektež at the transition from Kutjevo’s wine country towards eastern Slavonia.
