About this place

Bapska is a Syrmian village on the western slopes of Fruška gora, about fifteen kilometres from Ilok and 4.5 kilometres south of the Danube. Above the settlement lies Gradac, a multilayered prehistoric site containing Starčevo, Vinča, Sopot and Baden cultural horizons as well as Bronze Age finds. Archaeologists first opened test trenches at Gradac in 1911, with further excavations undertaken in 1938–39 and 1964. Bapska’s sacred landscape is defined by the Romanesque Church of Our Lady, commonly called Gospa Bapska, and the Baroque Church of St George; the Catholic parish itself is recorded from the 14th century. Local folklore preserves the songs, dances, costumes and customs of Šokac and Syrmian communities. Bapska works best as a compact heritage stop on a journey towards Ilok rather than as a conventional visitor complex. A car is the practical choice for combining Gradac and the two churches, since local connections are less frequent than the main Ilok–Vukovar bus service.

Bapska forms part of the City of Ilok, yet its landscape is shaped by the gentle Syrmian hills on Fruška gora’s western edge rather than Ilok’s urban Danube frontage. The Gradac archaeological site lies 4.5 kilometres south of the river and records settlement across several prehistoric periods. Starčevo, Vinča, Sopot and Baden layers, together with Bronze Age material, give the village an unusually deep historical perspective. Within Bapska, that chronology is complemented by the Romanesque church known as Gospa Bapska and the Baroque Church of St George. Šokac and Syrmian costumes, songs, dances and customs remain central to the village’s cultural identity, making Bapska a focused destination for travellers interested in archaeology, sacred heritage and the traditional culture of Croatian Syrmia.

Things to do

Start a Bapska visit at Gospa Bapska, a Romanesque church later reshaped in the Baroque period, then continue to the Baroque parish Church of St George. Next, head towards Gradac, the elevated locality that gave the Late Neolithic settlement its archaeological name. Do not expect a reconstructed open-air museum: the value of the stop lies in seeing the landscape where Starčevo, Vinča, Sopot and Baden layers, along with Bronze Age finds, were documented. Continue the story fifteen kilometres away in Ilok, where the City Museum occupies Odescalchi Castle and holds archaeological and ethnographic material from Croatian Syrmia. When local folklore is scheduled, Bapska’s costumes and dances provide a living counterpart to the village’s prehistoric and religious heritage.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Bapska lies about fifteen kilometres by road from Ilok, the town to which it administratively belongs, so driving is the simplest way to combine the village, Gradac and both churches. Ilok is linked to Vukovar, Osijek and Vinkovci by state road D2, with Bapska reached via the local road network serving the Syrmian settlements. Čazmatrans operated the Ilok–Vukovar bus connection in 2026, but a city notice for school holidays shows that timetables changed and some services did not run on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. As that notice does not confirm a stop in Bapska, car-free travellers should arrange the final connection specifically rather than assuming the main intercity service enters the village.
