Šarengradska utvrda

Šarengrad Fortress is the ruin of a medieval stronghold above Danube-side Šarengrad, built in 1420 on the site of the older burg Athya.

About

Šarengrad Fortress belongs to the medieval heritage of Šarengrad, a Danube settlement eight kilometres west of Ilok. The site of the modern settlement contained the burg Athya, recorded in sources from 1405; in 1420, Ivan Morovićki, Ban of Mačva, had a fortress built here and founded the Franciscan monastery of the Holy Spirit. After the Morović family died out in 1476, Šarengrad passed to the Gereb family, and it was under Ottoman rule from 1526 to 1688. Surviving remains include a square tower whose ground floor had a barrel vault, with traces of Gothic rib vaulting visible upstairs. The fortress is registered as an individual immovable cultural property under designation Z-1169.
