Beli is an ancient settlement in northern Cres, perched on a steep hill above a small harbour and pebble beach. The Romans developed Caput Insulae on the site of a prehistoric hillfort, using its position to watch the sea passages between Cres and Krk. Its most striking ancient remnant is the stone Roman bridge west of the village: eight metres long, 4.7 metres wide and 12 metres high. The compact historic core retains its medieval form, with a cistern square, Romanesque bell tower, churches and Glagolitic inscriptions. Beli is equally significant for its wildlife. The Beli Visitor and Griffon Vulture Rescue Centre interprets the remarkable Cres population that nests on cliffs directly above the sea. A network of trails enters the Tramuntana forests from the village, including the 19-kilometre route 305 via Ivanje and Porozina. Down at the harbour, swimming can be combined with a zipline crossing olive groves, the quay and the sea. From the mainland, the quickest approach is the 20-minute Brestova–Porozina ferry followed by the island road to Beli.
Beli rises above the eastern coast of northern Cres on the site of Roman Caput Insulae. A steep cliff separates its compact stone core from the harbour, campsite and pebble beach below. The village is protected as cultural-historical ensemble Z-2688; within the former walls, it retains a circular street pattern, a cistern square and tightly packed houses. The surrounding Tramuntana gives Beli a second identity: oak and chestnut woodland, a pastoral landscape and sea cliffs used by nesting griffon vultures encircle one of the oldest settlements on Cres.

At the entrance to Beli stands the Roman Bridge, an eight-metre stone structure estimated to be around 2,000 years old. Built from carefully fitted blocks, it crosses a ravine on the former route leading south from the town gate; both road and bridge were reconstructed in 1878. In Roman times it connected the settlement with the harbour in the bay below Beli. It is now part of Beli’s eco-trail, whose 20 marked stops include a stretch of the old Roman road on the way to the bridge.
Beli Beach occupies a small cove below the village beside a sheltered harbour and campsite. The shore is pebbled, and the elevation difference between beach and historic core makes the return walk a substantial climb. The harbour location makes it easy to combine swimming with the upper village, but anyone staying on the hill should account for the steep terrain when planning repeated trips to the water. Zip Line Beli crosses the same coastal setting, starting about 35 metres above sea level before passing over olive groves, the harbour and the sea to finish by the rocks at the beach’s far end.

Start in the upper village at the cistern square and the churches of the historic core, then descend to the Roman bridge on the old road. Continue to the Beli Visitor and Griffon Vulture Rescue Centre, where Tramuntana’s natural history is tied to active bird rescue work. Spend the afternoon at the harbour, combining the pebble beach with the zipline that crosses olive groves, the quay and the sea. For a full walking day, choose marked route 305 from Beli through Ivanje to Porozina, a 19-kilometre circuit.
The Beli Visitor and Griffon Vulture Rescue Centre is at Beli 4; the Priroda public institution lists 051/352-400 and mobile numbers 091/3000-917 and 091/3000-918. Check the centre’s current opening times before travelling, particularly outside summer. Because the village and harbour are separated by a steep slope, footwear should work equally well on stone lanes and forest paths. Carry sufficient water on Tramuntana hikes: the 19-kilometre route 305 crosses the sparsely populated northern part of the island.
The shortest mainland approach from Istria uses Jadrolinija ferry route 334 from Brestova to Porozina. In 2026 the crossing takes about 20 minutes, and the ticket is valid for any sailing on the selected date; from Porozina, a narrow island road continues to Beli. Cres can also be reached from Krk on the Valbiska–Merag ferry, followed by a longer drive north. Beli does not have the transport frequency of Cres town, so arrange a car, taxi or pre-booked transfer for the visitor centre, beach and trailheads.
Jadrolinija gives a crossing time of approximately 20 minutes for route 334.
The visitor and rescue centre is located at Beli 4.
