Bribir is the historic centre of Vinodol Municipality, standing in the green Vinodol valley above the coast between Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski. Although the destination belongs to a coastal region, the settlement itself is inland; swimming requires a descent toward Novi Vinodolski and the beach known as Bribir Coast. The Frankopan family ruled here for centuries, and Turan Tower with surviving wall fragments now represents their former castle. Bribir’s greatest flourishing is associated with Prince Bernardin Frankopan, who strengthened the fortress and its defences. After the feudal estate was abolished in 1848, the castle and the Vela and Mala gates were demolished, leaving Turan as the clearest spatial reminder of the fortified town. The parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1524 on the site of an older church linked to the age of the 1288 Vinodol Code; it was remodelled in Baroque style, burned at the end of 1944 and was restored in the 1980s. Present-day Bribir combines Frankopan heritage with local walking and cycling routes and access to viewpoints above Vinodol. Turan Tower serves as a seasonal interpretation venue, while Zaturan Park below the walls includes a Frankopan-themed children’s playground.
Bribir occupies a historically important position in the Vinodol valley, several kilometres above the shore at Novi Vinodolski. Its identity comes from four centuries of Frankopan rule, surviving walls and Turan Tower rather than direct contact with the sea. The old townscape changed after 1848, when the castle and the Vela and Mala town gates were removed following the abolition of the estate. Today, the historical core is complemented by the tower’s interpretation display, Zaturan Park and a Frankopan-themed playground. Vineyards, stone houses and views across the valley distinguish Bribir from the summer resorts squeezed along Kvarner’s narrow coastal strip.

Turan Tower is the dominant survivor of the Bribir fortress held for centuries by the Frankopans; for the 2026 summer season, access was announced from 1 July to 30 September. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1524 over an older sanctuary, remodelled in Baroque form during the first half of the 18th century, burned late in 1944 and restored in the 1980s. The municipal spatial plan also records Bribirska Peć as a prehistoric habitation site and the chapel sites of St Nicholas, St Vitus and St Jerome. These scattered remains show that Bribir’s heritage extends well beyond its Frankopan core.

Bribir is not a seaside settlement, so there is no beach in its centre. The nearest developed choice lies toward Novi Vinodolski, particularly along Bribir Coast on Obala Petra Krešimira IV, where the urban bathing strip extends for about 1,300 metres and alternates between pebbles, rocks and concrete. Official city information lists food outlets, showers, toilets, Wi-Fi, a children’s playground, outdoor exercise equipment, and a ramp and lift for visitors with disabilities. A swim therefore requires a drive or other transport downhill, followed by the climb back from coastal Novi Vinodolski into the Vinodol valley.
Start exploring Bribir at Turan Tower, where the footprint of the former Frankopan castle and its relationship with the surviving walls are easiest to understand. Continue to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1524, then descend into Zaturan Park and its themed children’s playground. A local walking loop can incorporate the improved route from Vela vrata toward Sokolana beneath the former fortifications. For a broader view over Vinodol, drive along the Bribir–Lukovo–Lič road to the viewpoint five kilometres above the village. Cyclists can follow a mapped route that descends from Lukovo through Bribir and the Pavlomir vineyards toward Novi Vinodolski.
Bribir’s food culture belongs to the Vinodol hinterland, where vines have been cultivated since antiquity and the local tourist board connects regional recipes with the cookbook “Ča su jili naši stari”, produced by Josip Pančić Primary School in Bribir. The village is therefore a suitable place to seek dishes based on seasonal vegetables, meat and Vinodol wine rather than relying solely on the coast’s fish repertoire. Individual taverns and opening hours vary with the season, so a specific venue should be checked shortly before visiting. A broader restaurant selection is available downhill in Novi Vinodolski.
The Vinodol Municipality Tourist Board is at Bribir 1, while the municipal administration is based at Bribir 34. Turan Tower operates seasonally: the published 2026 programme announced opening from 1 July to 30 September, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 08:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays from 12:00 to 20:00. Because heritage-space hours are issued by season, dates after 2026 should be checked again. Novi Vinodolski is more practical for beaches, larger shops and a broader range of services, while Bribir serves as the starting point for inland Vinodol.
A combined traffic, pedestrian and parking area was developed in central Bribir in front of the cultural centre through works involving the county road authority and Vinodol Municipality. Visitors to Turan Tower and Zaturan Park can therefore look for a marked space in the central zone and explore the remaining core on foot. At the viewpoint five kilometres along the Bribir–Lukovo–Lič road, the tourist board reports signage and either a parking area or turning space close by. The published sources do not provide a reliable 2026 parking tariff, so on-site signs remain authoritative.
Bribir is linked by road with Novi Vinodolski, Crikvenica and Rijeka. A municipal notice on subsidised transport documents Bribir–Rijeka and Novi Vinodolski–Bribir–Crikvenica services formerly operated by Autotrans, now part of Arriva’s system; current departures must be checked for the travel date. There is no railway station, and arrivals from the Adriatic coastal highway must turn into the Vinodol valley and climb toward central Bribir. Turan Tower, the church and Zaturan Park are walkable within the village, while the viewpoints on the road toward Lukovo and Lič are more practical by car or bicycle.
No. Bribir stands in the Vinodol valley above the coast; swimmers travel downhill toward Novi Vinodolski.

Bribir’s Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1524 on the site of an older church.
