Built and equipped between 1881 and 1886, Fort Verudella formed part of Pula’s Austro-Hungarian defence system together with nearby San Giovanni Battery. Its almost symmetrical pentagonal layout comprises a central stone block with a two-storey barracks, a moat, and an outer earth-and-stone embankment. Standing 31 metres above sea level, it recalls the era when Pula was an important naval port of the Monarchy. Since 2002, the fort has housed the main premises of Aquarium Pula, so a visit to the structure is naturally combined with the aquarium displays. It is especially rewarding for visitors who enjoy the meeting point of 19th-century military architecture and marine interpretation.
