Fort Bourguignon, originally Fort Monsival, stands on Monsival hill in Pula, 42 metres above sea level. This circular coastal fortress, approximately 46.5 metres in diameter, was built and altered in 1852–53, 1866 and 1914 as part of Defence District VI protecting Pula’s fortified harbour. Its surviving mass illustrates 19th-century military architecture, and its position was selected to oversee the coastal area. The Archaeological Museum of Istria now manages the fort; the site can be visited, although the interior is closed. It is reached from Pula in the direction of Verudela and is particularly rewarding to view from outside for enthusiasts of fortifications and architecture.
