Veli Rat Lighthouse stands by the Maknare sea passage, about three kilometres northwest of the village of Veli Rat on Dugi Otok. Built in 1849, its 41-metre tower makes it Croatia’s tallest lighthouse and one of the Adriatic’s most powerful. The slender stone tower rises above the low keeper’s buildings and the exposed coastal landscape. A chapel dedicated to St Nicholas was added beside the lighthouse in 1874. It is a rewarding stop for travellers exploring the northern end of Dugi Otok, combining an active navigational landmark with expansive views out to the open sea.
