Gradina Fortress, once known simply as Grad, rises above Vrgorac on the easternmost spur of Mount Matokit. A 15th-century defensive stronghold, it served as a centre of the medieval Gorska parish and is recorded in the mid-15th century when it belonged to Stjepan Vukčić Kosača. The Croatian Encyclopaedia notes the assumption that the Radivojević noble family built the Vrgorac fortress in the 14th century. Gradina was enlarged under Ottoman rule and served as a base for incursions towards the coast. The climb provides views over Vrgorac and the historic towers that punctuate its old town.
