Today’s single-nave Church of St Lawrence of Pazdigrad, with its apse, was built in the 19th century on the site of an earlier medieval church. The earlier building was first recorded in 1250 as Sanctus Laurentius Paganus; its surviving pre-Romanesque interlace-carved altar-screen panel now forms the front of the altar. Inside are a Gothic statue of St Lawrence and Mate Meneghello’s 1933 frescoes depicting the saint’s life, the Entombment and the Resurrection. The church suffered repeatedly during Ottoman incursions in the 16th and 17th centuries, while its 1983 restoration included archaeological research. It is protected as an individual immovable cultural property.
