The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady of the Island, stands on a river island in central Solin. The present church was built after a fire destroyed the older building in 1875; the replacement was completed in the late 1870s, while the bell tower followed in the early 20th century. During construction work in 1898, remains of an earlier church and fragments of Queen Helena’s famous funerary inscription were discovered. The site is therefore both an active sanctuary and a place tied to one of the most important episodes in Croatian early-medieval archaeology. It is easy to combine a visit with a walk along the Jadro and nearby Solin heritage sites.
