Imotski is a historic town in the Dalmatian hinterland beside the spectacular karst depressions of Blue and Red Lakes. Topana Fortress stands above Blue Lake, dominating the skyline and providing views towards Imotsko polje. The water level in Blue Lake changes dramatically through the year; when levels are high it is used for swimming, while a traditional football match can be played on the dry bottom when the lake completely recedes. Red Lake lies west of town and is known for the near-vertical reddish cliffs surrounding its deep karst depression. Imotski's old centre developed beside Topana, with stone streets and squares descending towards newer parts of town. Imotsko polje extends towards the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and strongly shapes local agriculture. Road access through the Sveti Ilija tunnel links Imotski with the Makarska Riviera, allowing mountain and coastal landscapes to be combined in one day. Blue Lake and Topana can be reached on foot from the centre, while a car is more practical for Red Lake and the wider Imotski region.

Blue Lake, Red Lake and Topana Fortress form the essential Imotski circuit, but each provides a different perspective on the karst landscape. Paths and viewpoints above Blue Lake are immediately beside the town, while Topana occupies a strategic position above its cliffs. Red Lake is not a bathing place; it is viewed from the rim because of its steep walls and deep karst depression. Between the lakes and the old centre, stone streets, churches and town squares can be linked on foot. For a wider tour of the Imotski region, a car provides access towards Prološko blato, vineyards and villages across Imotsko polje. In summer, visitors should expect very limited shade at the exposed viewpoints around the lakes.

The strongest sightseeing sequence begins at Topana Fortress and the viewpoints above Blue Lake because the height immediately reveals the relationship between the fortress, town and karst depression. If the path and water level allow, descending toward Blue Lake provides a completely different perspective and can end with a swim in summer. Red Lake should be viewed from established points on the rim because its cliffs are steep and the depression is extremely deep. After the two lakes, return to town for lunch or continue into the villages, wineries and smaller karst sites of the wider Imotski area. In 2026, the tourist board also organises selected guided programmes, so it is worth checking the current calendar before arrival rather than relying only on a self-guided visit.
The Imota Tourist Board publishes a concrete list of restaurants and food venues in the town and surrounding area. In Imotski itself, the list includes Hotel Venezia, Tri sunca at Hotel Emotheo, Euphoria, Imotska spiza, Pizzeria Antonio and Zdravljak Imotski, while Gurman and Fabo are in nearby Glavina Donja. The wider food circuit extends to rural households and wineries in Proložac, Runovići, Zmijavci and other settlements. This distribution allows lunch either to remain in town after visiting the lakes or to become part of a broader drive through the Imotski region. In 2026, opening hours should be confirmed directly, and advance notice is particularly useful for agrotourism venues and wineries because not all of them follow a fixed urban restaurant schedule.
The main practical consideration around Imotski’s lakes is terrain: Blue Lake involves a substantial descent and climb back out, while Red Lake is viewed from the rim. In summer, water, sun protection and footwear suitable for rocky paths are therefore essential. The Imota Tourist Board publishes current events, dining information and water-level resources, which in 2026 are particularly useful when deciding whether swimming in Blue Lake is realistic. The town has enough content for several hours, but a full day becomes more rewarding when one or two additional places in the wider Imotski region are included. Restaurant and cultural-site opening hours should be checked before arrival, while access to natural sites should always be adjusted to weather and ground conditions.
Blue Lake lies beside the town centre directly below Topana Fortress.
Swimming is possible when the water level and conditions in Blue Lake allow it.
Red Lake is surrounded by very steep cliffs, so visits take place from viewpoints around the edge of the karst depression.
Topana Fortress stands above the old town and Blue Lake.
