Vuglovec
About this place
Vuglovec is a settlement within the Town of Ivanec, positioned in the northern Croatian Zagorje landscape beside the D35 and below the slopes of Ivančica. Although it has no formal visitor centre, the village has an exceptional archaeological context: finds from very early human history were recovered near Sever’s quarry, while a stone axe, bones and a bronze sickle were found in Vuglovec itself. The settlement also appears in King Ferdinand’s 1564 grant to the Petheö family alongside Ivanec, Prigorec, Punikve and other villages of the Bela estate. Evidence from the Ivanec parish visitation of 1649 suggests that Vuglovec had roughly 200 residents about 350 years ago. Today, houses and cultivated hillsides mark the western side of the Ivanec area, and the official local hiking map places Vuglovec within the approach network around Ivančica. The D35 provides direct road access from Ivanec, while the town’s 2026 programme included upgrades to unclassified roads in the Vuglovec local-council area. The village therefore works best as a starting point for understanding the archaeology and upland geography of the Ivanec region.
Vuglovec is one of the 29 settlements administered by the Town of Ivanec. Its identity rests less on a monumental building than on its landscape and archaeological record: Ivanec’s official history notes a stone axe, bone remains and a bronze sickle found in the village area. Sever’s quarry near Vuglovec is likewise listed among sites preserving evidence from the earliest periods of human history in the Ivanec region. Written continuity comes from a 1564 royal grant naming Vuglovec as part of the Petheö family’s estate, while information associated with the 1649 parish visitation points to an already established rural community.

Things to do
Explore Vuglovec on a short walk through the settlement, paying attention to the hilly transition towards Ivanec and Ivančica. Archaeological discoveries from Vuglovec and nearby Sever’s quarry give the walk a prehistoric context, although the findspots are not presented as a formal open-air museum. Continue into Ivanec to connect the village’s archaeology and its Petheö-era record with the town’s historical core. For hikers, the official Ivanec-area map shows Vuglovec in relation to marked and pilgrimage routes around Ivančica, so the chosen route should follow the current waymarks visible on the ground.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Vuglovec’s principal road connection is the D35, from which the village’s local road network branches. An official road inventory lists an approximately 1.3-kilometre section running from the D35 through Vuglovec and linking several unclassified roads. The Town of Ivanec included the Vuglovec local-council area in its 2026 programme for modernising such roads, together with ten other council areas. Driving from Ivanec is therefore the simplest approach, while hikers can use the official Ivanec hiking map to place the village in relation to routes continuing around Ivančica.
