About this place

Vrpolje is a Slavonian municipal centre about ten kilometres south of Đakovo, positioned at a railway junction for routes towards Zagreb, Vinkovci, Osijek and Slavonski Šamac. Its defining figure is Ivan Meštrović, born here on 15 August 1883, whose legacy connects the gallery, parish church and sculptures around the village centre. The Ivan Meštrović Memorial Gallery opened on 3 June 1972 and now displays 35 bronze and plaster sculptures and reliefs; the purpose-built gallery is itself protected as cultural heritage. Beside it stands the late-Baroque Church of St John the Baptist, where Meštrović was baptised and where his larger-than-life bronze figure of the patron saint can be seen. This compact cluster makes Vrpolje more than a biographical footnote: it offers an unusually focused encounter with Meštrović’s work in a small Slavonian setting. Fields of wheat, maize, soybeans and oilseed rape still frame the village in the agricultural landscape south of Đakovo.

Vrpolje’s public identity is closely tied to Ivan Meštrović, yet its centre also brings together a Baroque church, ethnographic collections and a strong railway tradition. The sculptor was born here in 1883 and baptised in the Church of St John the Baptist, which now holds his bronze statue of the saint. The Memorial Gallery, opened in 1972, preserves original works, while the park outside extends the display into the open air. Directly opposite, the newer Eko-etno House interprets Slavonian traditions and finds from Dobrevo, making Vrpolje’s cultural core easy to explore on foot.
