Voćin
About this place
Voćin sits at Papuk’s northern foot, where the Slavonian plain gives way to the wooded landscape of Papuk Nature Park and UNESCO Global Geopark. The village forms one of the park’s two official gateways, while its Geo Info Centre uses multimedia exhibits to explore Papuk’s fossils, volcanic rocks and the evolution of life on Earth. A few kilometres away, Rupnica displays striking columns of volcanic rock and has been protected since 1948 as Croatia’s first geological natural monument. Voćin’s other defining landmark is the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a major late-Gothic church destroyed during the Homeland War and reconsecrated in 2011 after a meticulous facsimile reconstruction. The church received the title of minor basilica in 2022, affirming the long-standing pilgrimage tradition of the Shrine of Our Lady of Voćin. Together, the basilica, Geo Info Centre and nearby Rupnica turn a day in Voćin into an encounter with sacred heritage, post-war reconstruction and Papuk’s deep geological past.
Voćin brings together the pilgrimage shrine of Our Lady of Voćin and the western gateway to Papuk UNESCO Global Geopark. The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary at its centre was granted minor-basilica status in 2022, while the feast of Our Lady of Voćin falls on 21 August. Voćin’s Geo Info Centre introduces the geopark’s rocks through a multimedia display. Close to the centre lies Rupnica, a former quarry marked by orderly prisms of albite rhyolite. Protected in 1948 as Croatia’s first geological natural monument, Rupnica reveals four-, five- and six-sided columns formed as volcanic rock cooled.
Things to see
Rupnica is the leading natural attraction around Voćin. Protected in 1948 as Croatia’s first geological natural monument, it is recognised by four- and six-sided columns of albite rhyolite. The village itself is dominated by the Basilica of the Visitation, a single-nave late-Gothic church with an elongated polygonal sanctuary, buttresses and three side chapels. Rebuilt with surviving stone and historical documentation after its wartime destruction, it was reconsecrated in 2011. Voćin’s third essential sight is the Geo Info Centre, created as an official gateway to Papuk Nature Park; its exhibition traces a path from the formation of Earth and early life to Papuk fossils and evidence of the ancient Pannonian Sea.

Things to do
Begin at the Geo Info Centre Voćin, whose exhibits provide the background needed to understand the rocks and fossils found across Papuk. Continue to the Basilica of the Visitation and examine the polygonal sanctuary, buttresses, side chapels and bell tower of the reconstructed late-Gothic building. From the centre of Voćin, head towards Rupnica and follow its short educational trail, where panels explain the formation of the regular volcanic columns. Climbing on the rock formation and removing samples are prohibited, so the phenomenon should be observed from the designated path. This sequence moves logically from an introduction to Papuk’s geology, through Voćin’s sacred heritage, to a close view of a genuine volcanic outcrop in the forest.
