About this place

Viškovci is a small Slavonian settlement administered by the Town of Pleternica, positioned among Kuzmica, Srednje Selo and Vesela. Croatian statistical records used the name Viškovci Požeški from 1910 to 1981, distinguishing the village from the municipality of the same name near Đakovo. Its main visitor landmark lies south of the houses: Viškovački grad, the wooded remains of a medieval hilltop fort in Požeška gora. A marked walking and running route reaches the site from Pleternica Park, continuing through Vesela before turning onto a forest road towards the ruins. The same trail links the fort with Pleternica’s vineyards, the Bećarac Museum, the Starac locality and the viewpoint beside the large barrel at Markota winery. Viškovci therefore suits travellers who want to combine a quiet Slavonian village with a longer outing on Požeška gora rather than a circuit of urban sights. The village also has regional bus connections: 2026 timetables place Viškovci on routes 25 and 27, providing links towards Požega, Pleternica and neighbouring settlements.

Viškovci is defined by the edge of Požeška gora and its connection with Pleternica, not by the identically named municipality in Osijek-Baranja County. The historical statistical name Viškovci Požeški, used between 1910 and 1981, still provides a useful distinction between the two places. In woodland south of the village stands Viškovački grad, a hilltop fort once positioned to overlook approaches to the Požega basin. Viškovci belongs to the close cluster of settlements around Kuzmica, Vesela and Srednje Selo, so its character is clearest where cultivated Slavonian land begins to rise into the forested slopes of Požeška gora.

Things to do

Begin in Viškovci, then head towards the woodland south of the village and the remains of Viškovački grad. For a fuller outing, follow the official Viškovački grad trail: it starts in Pleternica Park, takes Bana Josipa Jelačića Street to Vesela and then climbs along a forest road to the fort. The onward route connects Pleternica’s vineyards, the Starac locality and the viewpoint marked by the distinctive barrel at Markota winery. Back in Pleternica, the walk can finish at the Bećarac Museum, which the same trail includes among its principal stops.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Viškovci forms part of the Požega-Slavonia County public bus network. In timetables published for 2026, the village appears on route 27 from Požega through Novoselci to Ašikovci and route 25 from Požega through Pleternica to Brodski Drenovac. Route 27 does not operate on Sundays or public holidays under the published schedule, so a visit to Viškovački grad on those days is better planned by car or as a longer walk from Pleternica. Reaching the wooded fort itself requires walking along the trail that branches off near Vesela.
