About this place

Sveti Matej is a scattered Zagorje village in the municipality of Gornja Stubica, positioned between the Stubica area and the pilgrimage town of Marija Bistrica. Its rural pattern reflects the northern slopes of Medvednica, where the wider municipality spreads across a landscape of hills and small settlements. Since the Parish of Laz was established in 2001, Sveti Matej and Laz Stubički have belonged to it rather than to the historic Parish of St George in Gornja Stubica. The village also has its own long-standing volunteer fire brigade, founded in 1964. The most rewarding sightseeing lies in nearby Gornja Stubica: Oršić Castle houses the Museum of Peasant Revolts, while St George’s Church connects the area with a written record dating to 1209. Sveti Matej itself suits travellers seeking a quiet base for exploring the lanes and slopes around Stubica and Laz rather than a conventional resort itinerary. Presečki grupa’s bus route 649 stops at Matej between Gornja Stubica and Laz. Because the same service continues toward Marija Bistrica and Konjščina, the village has a useful public-transport link across this part of Hrvatsko Zagorje.

Sveti Matej is one of the small, dispersed settlements on the Zagorje side of Medvednica within Gornja Stubica municipality. Its bond with Laz is institutional as well as geographical: in 2001 the village became part of the newly established Parish of Laz after leaving the Parish of St George in Gornja Stubica. Local continuity is also embodied by the Sveti Matej volunteer fire brigade, active since 1964. Unlike nearby Gornja Stubica, whose identity centres on Oršić Castle and the Museum of Peasant Revolts, Sveti Matej has no compact historic core or sequence of formal visitor attractions. Its character instead emerges along rural roads and through its links with Laz, Karivaroš and Gornja Stubica.

Things to do

A stay in Sveti Matej works best as part of a compact tour of the Gornja Stubica countryside. Begin with the dispersed rural landscape around the Matej bus stop, then continue to Oršić Castle in Gornja Stubica, home to the Croatian Zagorje Museums and the permanent Museum of Peasant Revolts exhibition. In central Gornja Stubica, visit St George’s Church, documented as early as 1209 and subsequently reshaped through several building phases. A second route leads toward Laz, the parish centre to which Sveti Matej has belonged since 2001. This sequence links the everyday setting of a small Zagorje village with the two places that most clearly frame it: Laz and historic Gornja Stubica.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Sveti Matej is served by the Matej stop on county bus route 649, operated by Presečki grupa between Stubičke Toplice and Konjščina secondary school. The route links the village with Gornja Stubica, Laz, Marija Bistrica and Konjščina; the published timetable places Matej 13 kilometres from the starting point in Stubičke Toplice. On the same route, Gornja Stubica appears at kilometre eight and Marija Bistrica at kilometre 23. The listed departures are sparse and largely shaped around school travel, so a bus excursion requires checking the current timetable carefully. A car offers much more flexibility for combining Sveti Matej with Oršić Castle, Laz and the surrounding Zagorje hills.
