About this place

Stupnik is a suburban municipality on Zagreb’s southwestern edge, comprising Donji Stupnik, Gornji Stupnik and Stupnički Obrež. Its proximity to Lučko and the motorway junctions around Jankomir has produced a distinctive mix of old village fabric, newer residential streets and commercial zones. The principal historic landmark is the Chapel of St Benedict in Donji Stupnik, a registered cultural property listed as Z-291; its interior furnishings are separately protected as Z-6830. The chapel provides a clear focal point for a short drive through Gornji Stupnik and Stupnički Obrež. Stupnik lacks a conventional tourist centre, but its metropolitan-edge location reveals how a historic rural settlement has changed under Zagreb’s influence. ZET operates bus services within the municipality, while county route 518 links Samobor, Sveta Nedelja and Stupnik. The destination therefore works best as a brief, focused visit rather than an all-day excursion.

Stupnik developed immediately beside Zagreb, yet its three constituent settlements retain distinct names: Donji Stupnik, Gornji Stupnik and Stupnički Obrež. Donji Stupnik preserves the Chapel of St Benedict, protected under registration Z-291, together with separately listed church furnishings. Gornji Stupnik concentrates municipal and educational facilities around Gornjostupnička Street and St Benedict Street. The contrast between the chapel, older village lanes and large commercial properties near Zagreb’s edge most clearly expresses modern Stupnik: a historic settlement absorbed into the capital’s wider metropolitan landscape.

Things to do

The clearest way to explore Stupnik begins at the Chapel of St Benedict in Donji Stupnik, where visitors can examine the modest historic building and its relationship with the older village core. Continue towards Gornji Stupnik along a street that also bears St Benedict’s name; the primary school and municipal facilities are located there. Extend the drive through Stupnički Obrež to compare all three settlements within the municipality. Although compact, this route makes the transition from Donji Stupnik’s religious landmark to newer suburban development on Zagreb’s edge especially visible.
