About this place

Prelog is a Lower Međimurje town shaped by two very different landmarks: the Baroque Church of St James and the reservoir created for the Dubrava hydroelectric plant. On the southern edge of town, Marina Prelog draws cyclists, runners, boaters and families to the water, while the Croata insulanus Museum introduces Croatian naïve art through works by Ivan Generalić, Ivan Rabuzin and Ivan Lacković Croata. Built between 1758 and 1761, St James’s contains notable Baroque altars; its churchyard also yielded the foundations of a 15th-century circular tower, now represented on Prelog’s coat of arms. Road access centres on the D20, whereas the nearest rail connection is in Čehovec, the only settlement within the City of Prelog to have a station. A compact visit can therefore link the museum and church with lunch on Glavna Street and an evening walk beside the marina. Nearby Otok, Čehovec and Draškovec add Roman remains, the rural landscape of Lower Međimurje and further religious heritage to the itinerary.

Prelog stands on the Drava’s left bank in southern Međimurje County, while its municipal territory also includes Cirkovljan, Čehovec, Čukovec, Draškovec, Hemuševec, Oporovec and Otok. Its development as a market settlement was tied to a Drava crossing and to the royal guests invited into Međimurje by King Béla IV in the 13th century. Modern Prelog combines a compact centre around Glavna Street and St James’s Church with a recreational zone beside a large reservoir. This unusual meeting of a Lower Međimurje industrial centre, Croatian naïve art and water sports gives the town a character distinct from its neighbours.

Things to see

Prelog’s principal religious monument is the Church of St James, built from 1758 to 1761 and furnished with altars dedicated to St James, St John of Nepomuk and St Joseph. Foundations of a circular 15th-century tower were discovered in the churchyard; the remains were reburied for protection, but the tower became a motif on the municipal coat of arms. The Croata insulanus Museum maintains the permanent exhibition “Naïve Art – Croatian Pride”, featuring Generalić, Mraz, Večenaj, Rabuzin and Lacković Croata. The town’s leading contemporary attraction is Marina Prelog, facing the Dubrava hydroelectric reservoir and serving as a base for water-based recreation.

Things to do

Begin at St James’s Church, whose courtyard contains monuments to prominent Croatian figures and the site of an excavated medieval tower. Continue to the Croata insulanus Museum for its Croatian naïve-art collection, then follow Glavna Street towards Prelog’s southern edge. Reserve the afternoon for Marina Prelog, where lakeside paths, children’s play areas and routes used by local runners and cyclists converge. For a more active finish, nearby DG Sport offers badminton, table tennis, fitness facilities and an indoor climbing wall, although sessions should be checked in advance. Moving from the church to the reservoir also traces Prelog’s transformation from a historic market settlement into a modern recreation centre.

Food and drink

Prelog’s dining choices run from the central streets to the lakeside recreation zone. Hotel Panorama and the DG Sport complex on Matije Gupca Street include a restaurant and pizzeria, making them convenient after time at the marina. Gradska kavana Lovac on Glavna Street serves home-style dishes and weekday lunches, while Trattoria Rossa on the same street focuses on pizza and trattoria fare. Restoran Prepelica operates in nearby Otok, and Keder provides the kitchen service at Marina Prelog’s café. Because the marina kitchen publishes its own limited service periods, visitors should check the venue’s current notice before travelling specifically for a meal.

Practical information

Practical information

The Prelog Tourist Board is based at Glavna 35 and lists +385 99 711 6995 as its visitor contact number. The Croata insulanus Museum, St James’s Church and Marina Prelog should not be treated as one attraction with shared hours: the museum keeps its own schedule, the church serves an active parish, and lakeside facilities depend on season and weather. Sports courts at DG Sport require advance booking. Anyone planning a meal at the marina should check Keder’s separate kitchen schedule, which differs from the café’s hours. The principal sights in Prelog’s central streets can be covered on foot.

Getting there and around

Prelog’s main road connection is the D20, which leads towards Čakovec and continues into the Podravina region. The settlement itself has no railway station; the nearest rail access within the City of Prelog’s administrative area is at Čehovec, on the Kotoriba–Čakovec line. Čehovec is the only one of the municipality’s eight settlements with a station, so the final leg into central Prelog must be arranged by road. Municipal documents identify Čakovec, Varaždin and Koprivnica as the principal nearby road hubs. A car or bicycle is particularly useful for reaching Marina Prelog and DG Sport on the town’s southern edge.
