Nova Kapela, Brod-Posavina County
About this place
Nova Kapela is a small Slavonian administrative centre set between the Sava lowlands and the foothills of Požeška Gora, within the joint visitor area promoted as Meridiana Slavonica. Its focal point is the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an 18th-century single-nave building with a semicircular sanctuary, rectangular sacristy and a walled enclosure marked by four corner chapels. The church also holds protected furnishings and an organ, while the local cemetery contains the All Saints chapel, built as the mausoleum of Aleksandar Seitz. The nearby Ravnjaš archaeological site adds a much older layer to Nova Kapela’s rural Slavonian character. Elsewhere in the municipality, visitors can seek out the Church of St Luke, dated to 1275, in Srednji Lipovac, hear the protected traditional speech of Siče and explore the restored village setting of Stara Kapela. Nova Kapela is unusually convenient for a settlement of its size because Nova Kapela–Batrina railway station stands in the village itself, on the main rail corridor across Slavonia. Together, its religious monuments, archaeology, Požeška Gora foothill villages and rail access make it a practical base for an unhurried day in western Brod-Posavina County.
Nova Kapela lies where the level Slavonian plain begins to rise towards the southern slopes of Požeška Gora. Its protected church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, together with the listed interior collection and organ, forms a compact heritage ensemble at the centre of the village. The cemetery adds another distinctive monument: the All Saints chapel, built as Aleksandar Seitz’s mausoleum. Across the municipality, the Ravnjaš archaeological site, the early Gothic Church of St Luke in Srednji Lipovac and the protected traditional speech of Siče reveal several different layers of local identity. Membership in the Meridiana Slavonica tourism area links Nova Kapela with Brodski Stupnik and Oriovac through a shared landscape of vineyards, woodland, fishponds and southern Slavonian village heritage.

Things to do
Start in central Nova Kapela and take the roughly 26-kilometre circular cycling route, one of the marked trails promoted by the Meridiana Slavonica destination. For a shorter outing, follow the eight-kilometre walking and cycling trail through the eco-ethno village of Stara Kapela; it climbs into the Požeška Gora foothills and passes viewpoints, rest stops and traditional rural houses. Travellers staying near Nova Kapela can pair a walk around the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Žavnjača watercourse, which the local tourism board lists as an angling location. A longer circuit can include Siče, noted for its distinctive folklore and speech, or Ravnjaš, an archaeological site associated with the prehistoric Sopot culture.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Nova Kapela–Batrina station is at 19 Kralja Dmitra Zvonimira Street, allowing rail passengers to arrive directly in the settlement. HŽ Passenger Transport’s 2025/26 timetable includes the Nova Kapela–Batrina–Pleternica–Našice route, while a March 2026 notice listed departures towards Pleternica and Velika; the exact service should therefore be selected for the intended travel date. The station also stands on the Novska–Tovarnik railway, the principal rail axis linking western and eastern Slavonia. A car or bicycle is more useful for continuing to Srednji Lipovac, Siče and Stara Kapela because their heritage sites are distributed among separate villages and cannot comfortably be covered on foot from central Nova Kapela.
