About this place

Letovanić is a village in the Kupa region of Lekenik Municipality, with a landscape, heritage and recent history inseparable from the river. Its most distinctive buildings are traditional timber houses, including Vukčeva hiža from 1763 and Božidar Škofač’s ancestral house from 1793. Three restored wooden houses contain the Škofač Ethnographic Collection, a protected cultural asset preserving costumes, textiles, household objects and religious items from everyday life in the Kupa valley. Škofač also helped restore the 18th-century Baroque Chapel of Saints Fabian and Sebastian, while Letovanićki Vrh has the wooden Chapel of St Bartholomew dating from 1878. The Kupa remains part of village life at Letovanić Beach, and it also shaped a defining episode in 1991: the temporary pontoon “Bridge of Salvation” enabled the evacuation of more than 20,000 displaced people from Banovina. A visit consequently combines the riverbank, carefully preserved timber architecture and an unusually rich record of local dress, crafts and customs.

Letovanić belongs to the Kupa region not only because of its riverside setting but also through its surviving timber architecture. Wooden upper-storey houses with external porches shape the village streetscape, and several restored examples form the core of the Božidar Škofač Ethnographic Collection. Vukčeva hiža, dating from 1763, is the oldest highlighted house in this restored group, while the 1793 ancestral home displays the ornament known as the Croatian braid. Local identity also encompasses journeys in traditional riverboats, memories of the Kupa boatmen called “kumpasi”, and the 1991 pontoon Bridge of Salvation erected across the river.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Letovanić has no railway stop on the main Zagreb–Sisak line; the official HŽPP timetable for 2026 identifies nearby Lekenik as the relevant rail access point, with the final leg to the village made by road. A car is also useful within Letovanić because the Kupa riverbank, the group of restored timber houses and the chapel at Letovanićki Vrh occupy different parts of the settlement. When planning a route across the Kupa, note that the historic Bridge of Salvation was a temporary military pontoon structure erected in 1991, not a permanent road crossing operating today.
