About this place

Set beside the River Bednja between Ivanščica and Ravna Gora, Lepoglava is identified above all by its bobbin lace. Lepoglava lacemaking forms part of Croatia’s lacemaking tradition, inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. In the town centre, this living craft meets a remarkable Pauline legacy: the Church of the Immaculate Conception contains Baroque altars, historic organs and frescoes by Ivan Krstitelj Ranger, while the former monastery recalls Lepoglava’s earlier role as a centre of learning and art. A very different story emerges at Gaveznica–Kameni Vrh, a protected geological site of volcanic rock and agate close to town. These highlights fit neatly into one compact visit—church and lace heritage in the centre, the mineral display at the cultural centre, then a walk toward Gaveznica. Kamenica, Višnjica, Ivanščica and Trakošćan broaden the surrounding itinerary, while local menus introduce Zagorje štrukli, meat baked in a covered pot, turnip-filled gibanica and the regional mlinčani kolač.

Lepoglava brings together bobbin lace, Pauline heritage and volcanic geology in the Bednja valley between Ivanščica and Ravna Gora. Its lace is braided from thread wound around wooden bobbins, with roses, acorns, butterflies and oak leaves among the motifs that define the local style. In 2009 UNESCO included the Lepoglava tradition in the joint inscription of Croatian lacemaking alongside Pag and Hvar. The former Pauline monastery added another layer, turning the town into an earlier centre of education, literature and Baroque art. Just beyond the centre, Gaveznica–Kameni Vrh offers a striking contrast as a protected site of volcanic rock and agate. Within the wider municipal area, Kamenica and Višnjica add churches, chapels and upland scenery to a Lepoglava itinerary.

Things to see

The Church of the Immaculate Conception is Lepoglava’s foremost sacred monument, distinguished by its Baroque furnishings and frescoes by the Pauline painter Ivan Krstitelj Ranger. The adjoining monastic complex recalls the period when the Pauline order developed education, art and writing here; that intellectual legacy includes Ivan Belostenec’s Latin-Croatian dictionary, Gazophylacium. The Lepoglava Lace Gallery presents a craft included in UNESCO’s 2009 inscription of Croatian lacemaking. Gaveznica–Kameni Vrh is a protected geological monument and agate locality formed from volcanic rock close to the town centre. The mineral exhibition in Lepoglava’s cultural centre complements a field visit to Gaveznica with specimens that explain the area’s unusual geology.

Things to do

Start at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where Baroque altars, historic organs and frescoes by Ivan Krstitelj Ranger reward a careful look. Continue to the Lepoglava Lace Gallery to recognise the wooden bobbins, linen or cotton thread, and motifs such as roses, snails, acorns and butterflies. After viewing the mineral collection in the cultural centre, walk toward Gaveznica–Kameni Vrh, an agate-bearing former quarry cut into volcanic rock. Hikers can follow a route from Restaurant Ivančica above Gaveznica and through vineyards, orchards and woodland. In September, the International Lace Festival adds exhibitions and demonstrations from Croatian and international lacemaking centres to the town visit.

Food and drink

Restaurant Ivančica at Ulica hrvatskih pavlina 1 serves locally named dishes including the Pauline and Ban steaks, hunter’s pork chop, meat cooked in a covered pot and the Lepoglava platter. In nearby Žarovnica, Restaurant JAK offers Zagorje štrukli and covered-pot meat, with advance notice requested by the tourist board listing. Nec, also in Žarovnica, focuses on traditional food made from local ingredients, including štrukli, wine and rakija. For a casual meal in central Lepoglava, Pizzeria Pavlini stands at Ulica hrvatskih pavlina 6. Festival programmes also preserve two particularly local flavours: gibanica filled with turnip and mlinčani kolač, a layered pastry associated with the Lepoglava area.

Practical information

Practical information

Lepoglava Tourist Board is at Ulica hrvatskih pavlina 7 and provides information about the lace tradition, Gaveznica and local programmes. The Lepoglava Lace Gallery lists its own contact details, so arranging a visit or workshop before arrival is sensible. The church, galleries and routes toward Gaveznica occupy a relatively compact part of town, while a car is more practical for Kamenica, Višnjica and the more distant Ivanščica slopes. September’s International Lace Festival fills the centre with exhibitions, a fair and craft demonstrations, making the official programme useful for planning. Sturdy footwear is advisable at Gaveznica and on the wooded routes above the quarry, particularly after rain.

Parking

Central Lepoglava has documented public parking areas near the bus stop on Ulica hrvatskih pavlina and beside the post office. These locations are convenient for walking to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Lepoglava Lace Gallery and exhibitions in the cultural centre. Restaurant Ivančica serves as a landmark for local walking programmes toward Gaveznica, making that part of town another useful arrival point by car. During the International Lace Festival, exhibitions, market stalls and events around the Ivančica terrace alter the normal use of the centre, so drivers should follow temporary signs and organisers’ directions. As available municipal documentation does not provide a dependable current visitor tariff, check the notices at the chosen parking area.

Getting there and around

Lepoglava has a railway station on the Varaždin–Golubovec line. In the HŽ Passenger Transport timetable valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026, the journey between Varaždin and Lepoglava takes about an hour, with trains continuing to the terminus at Golubovec. Ivanec lies only two stops away on the same line, via Kuljevčica. By road, Lepoglava is approximately 32 kilometres southwest of Varaždin and about seven kilometres west of Ivanec. A car is the more practical choice for Trakošćan, Kamenica, Višnjica and outlying trailheads, while the church, lace attractions and central Lepoglava link easily on foot.
