About this place

Kravarsko crowns a hill about 240 metres high in the central Vukomeričke gorice, between the Turopolje plain and the Kupa basin. Vineyards, orchards and the valleys of the Pogledička and Curek streams shape the surrounding countryside, which is best explored on a slow drive or bicycle ride towards Pokupsko. The village landmark is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross: the parish appears in records from 1334, while its previous church building dated from 1874. After the earthquake of 29 December 2020 caused severe damage, the church was reconstructed on the same hilltop, to almost the same dimensions, and consecrated in 2023. The square shared by the church and municipal buildings provides a natural starting point for a visit. Roads connect Kravarsko with Velika Gorica, Pokupsko and Glina, and travellers arriving from Zagreb normally approach through Velika Gorica. Kravarsko rewards visitors with a distinctive ridge-top setting, views across the locally named Kravarske gorice and a parish heritage that reaches much further back than the rebuilt church suggests.

Kravarsko’s character comes from its ridge-top position in the Vukomeričke gorice, roughly 20 kilometres south of central Zagreb as the crow flies, between the Sava and Kupa drainage areas. The village is the municipal seat, while the wider municipality comprises ten settlements spread across 58.06 square kilometres of hilly terrain. Rising above the stream valleys, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is both Kravarsko’s visual landmark and the successor to the church erected in 1874. Its parish is listed in the surviving parish register of 1334 and historically belonged to the noble municipality of Turopolje. This combination of elevated setting, vineyard slopes and unusually deep parish continuity sets Kravarsko apart from the flatter Turopolje villages below the hills.

Things to do

Begin at Trg Stjepana Radića, where the rebuilt Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands beside the municipal offices. It occupies the site of the 1874 church badly damaged in the 2020 earthquake, making the present building a link between Kravarsko’s historic silhouette and its recent reconstruction. From the centre, follow the local road across the rolling Vukomeričke gorice, passing the vineyards and orchards characteristic of the municipality. Cyclists can tackle the Velika Gorica–Kravarsko–Pokupsko route, which crosses these hills before continuing towards the Kupa River. For a shorter outing, stay on the ridge roads around Kravarsko, where breaks between the houses and cultivated slopes reveal views towards the Pogledička and Curek stream valleys.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Kravarsko lies on the road corridor linking Velika Gorica, Pokupsko and Glina, so drivers from Zagreb normally travel through Velika Gorica before heading south into the Vukomeričke gorice. Public transport centres on the Velika Gorica–Pokupsko bus route, listed by the City of Velika Gorica among services operated by Autoturist; passengers should confirm that their chosen departure stops in Kravarsko. Zagreb County has subsidised regional bus services since 2022, and Kravarsko itself hosted the presentation of improved connections towards Velika Gorica and onward to Zagreb. There is no railway station in the village, leaving the bus and car as the practical options. Allow extra time for the hilly terrain and winding local roads on the final approach.
