About this place

Krapje stretches along the left bank of the Sava in the southern part of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, approximately 15 kilometres southwest of Novska. Long plots facing the river and traditional Posavina houses built from pedunculate oak give the village its distinctive form. Its exceptionally coherent vernacular architecture earned Krapje designation as a village of architectural heritage in 1995, while more than 80 timber houses preserve a streetscape now rare elsewhere in Posavina. The restored complex at number 18 houses the Krapje Visitor Centre, with a multimedia room, park information, and bicycle and canoe rental. The Border Guards Trail begins in its grounds and runs toward Drenov Bok and the Krapje Đol special ornithological reserve, Croatia’s largest spoonbill nesting site. Observation points along the route echo the fortifications of the former Military Frontier. Krapje is not a conventional excursion village lined with cafés: its timber architecture, floodplain and riverside setting are best explored slowly on foot or by bicycle. For a meal, Ekoetno Selo Strug in nearby Plesmo is a specific option roughly one kilometre away.

Krapje belongs to Jasenovac Municipality and lies beside the Sava near the Veliki Strug channel, only 99 metres above sea level. Timber houses facing the road and long agricultural plots reflect life on the flood-prone edge of Lonjsko Polje. Pedunculate oak supplied the main material for houses, raised storage buildings and farm structures, and the coherent ensemble secured architectural-heritage status for the village in 1995. The visitor centre at number 18 now links that built heritage with the nature park’s wildlife. Krapje is also the starting point for Krapje Đol, a wetland used by breeding spoonbills, so the village streetscape opens directly into a protected floodplain landscape.

Things to see

Krapje stands out for its line of restored wooden Posavina houses, which earned it designation as a village of architectural heritage in 1995. The Krapje Visitor Centre at No. 18 occupies a restored single-storey timber house and includes a multimedia room, a small gallery and a souvenir shop. The Border Guards’ Trail begins in its courtyard, running towards the Orlinci pasture and Krapje Đol reserve, Croatia’s largest spoonbill breeding site. Two reconstructed wooden watchtowers along the path recall the former Military Frontier.

Things to do

Start at the Krapje Visitor Centre at house number 18, where a multimedia room introduces both the village and Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. Continue along the main road to compare oak-built homes, raised storage structures and farmyards. For a longer outing, hire a bicycle or canoe at the centre, or follow the Border Guards Trail toward Drenov Bok. The path loops around Krapje Đol reserve and passes two birdwatching structures designed to recall the former Military Frontier. Bring binoculars for spoonbill watching, plus water and food before setting out, as the park specifically notes that shops and restaurants are scarce within its boundaries.

Food and drink

Krapje itself does not have an extensive year-round dining scene, and the nature park advises visitors to bring sufficient food and drink. The nearest clearly documented restaurant is Ekoetno Selo Strug in neighbouring Plesmo, about one kilometre from Krapje. Its dining room forms part of a rural complex of restored oak houses beside the Strug River and draws on the Posavina setting. Food moves into Krapje itself during Architectural Heritage Days: the 2026 programme advertised carp roasted on forked sticks and hunter’s stew alongside a local-produce fair. That festival menu applied specifically to 18–19 September 2026 rather than the village’s everyday offer.

Practical information

Practical information

The Krapje Visitor Centre is at Krapje 18, at the far end of the village when approaching from Nova Subocka and near the entrance when arriving from Jasenovac. It provides information about Lonjsko Polje and rents bicycles and canoes; its grounds include a play and rest area. Pre-booked groups can join programmes devoted to Krapje’s architecture, the Posavina horse and the spoonbill. For an independent walk toward Krapje Đol, bring sturdy footwear, water, food and mosquito protection. Because shops and restaurants are limited across the park, purchase supplies before reaching the village.

Parking

The most practical point for drivers is the Krapje Visitor Centre at house number 18, reached by following the brown tourist signs through the village. The complex stands at the far end of Krapje when approaching via Lipovljani, Nova Subocka, Stara Subocka and Plesmo, but appears immediately on entering from Jasenovac and Drenov Bok. Nature Park planning documents specifically record a Krapje car park as part of the visitor-management infrastructure. No separate parking tariff was published for 2026, so cars should be left in the designated area by the centre rather than beside the timber houses or on the narrow village road.

Getting there and around

Drivers approaching from Zagreb can leave the A3 motorway at Lipovljani, follow county road Ž-3249 to Nova Subocka, then continue through Stara Subocka and Plesmo into Krapje. An alternative uses the Novska exit, proceeds toward Jasenovac and turns before the Sava bridge toward Drenov Bok and Krapje. Brown tourist signs lead to the visitor centre at number 18. The Croatian Encyclopedia places Krapje about 15 kilometres southwest of Novska. Do not assume a regular public connection without checking locally; a special free coach from Zagreb was announced specifically for Architectural Heritage Days on 19 September 2026 and required advance booking.
