Jesenje
About this place
Jesenje is a Zagorje municipality beneath Strahinjčica, bordered by the areas of Krapina, Radoboj, Đurmanec and Novi Golubovec. It comprises Gornje Jesenje, Donje Jesenje, Cerje Jesenjsko, Brdo Jesenjsko and Lužani Zagorski, with Gornje Jesenje serving as the administrative and parish centre. Its parish church of St John the Baptist was blessed on 4 October 1858. Scattered hamlets and hillside homes give the area its recognisable Zagorje character, while Strahinjčica shapes the local walking experience. A marked four-kilometre trail climbs from Gornje Jesenje to the stone mountain hut at 618 metres, with an indicated walking time of about 90 minutes. Another approach begins at Žutnica railway halt and runs 4.5 kilometres via Jelenske pećine to the same hut. Jesenje also stands on a longer marked route to Trakošćan, measuring ten kilometres. It is consequently a destination for travellers interested in combining a specific piece of Zagorje church heritage with well-defined hiking stages rather than urban attractions.
The Jesenje area occupies hilly terrain framed by Strahinjčica, Ivančica, Ravna Gora and the Macelj hills, with its five municipal settlements dispersed across slopes and valleys. Gornje Jesenje’s focal landmark is the church of St John the Baptist, erected on the site of an earlier church of the same dedication and opened for worship in 1858. The parish covers six settlements, including Koprivnica Zagorska, which is not one of the municipality’s five administrative settlements. Local identity is also maintained by the Gornje Jesenje cultural association known as Žensko kazalište, or “Women’s Theatre”, reflecting a distinctive community performance tradition. Krapina’s proximity is most visible in the hiking and cycling links across Strahinjčica, yet Jesenje retains its dispersed rural form rather than a compact town centre.

Things to do
Start in Gornje Jesenje at the church of St John the Baptist, completed and blessed in 1858, then choose a marked route onto Strahinjčica. Trail 307 reaches the mountain hut after four kilometres and roughly 90 minutes of walking. From the hut, a further 1.4-kilometre climb leads to Sušec peak, with an indicated time of about 45 minutes. Hikers seeking a longer stage can follow the ten-kilometre Gornje Jesenje–Trakošćan route, estimated at three hours. The stone hut stands at 618 metres, and its terrace looks across the Krapina valley towards Medvednica. For cyclists, Jesenje sits between established routes along the slopes of the Macelj hills and Strahinjčica, with a new connecting trail between Brdo Jesenjsko and Cerje Jesenjsko under development through April 2027.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Road access to Jesenje usually comes from Krapina, Đurmanec, Radoboj or Novi Golubovec, depending on the chosen hamlet and trailhead. Žutnica has a railway halt, from which a marked 4.5-kilometre path reaches Jelenske pećine and the Strahinjčica mountain hut in about two hours. HŽ Passenger Transport lists Žutnica among its stops, but departures should be checked for the actual travel date because timetables change. Regional bus journeys can be searched through the Presečki operator; its services switched to the school-term timetable on 7 September 2026. Travellers heading for the parish church, municipal offices or the four-kilometre hut trail should enter Gornje Jesenje as their destination rather than relying only on the municipality name.
