About this place

Gornja Rijeka lies beneath the western end of the Kalnik hills, where Prigorje villages, vineyards and wooded ravines climb towards Mali Kalnik. The settlement’s principal historic landmarks are Erdödy–Rubido Castle and the nearby Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Renaissance-Baroque, three-winged castle is associated with Sidonija Rubido Erdödy, Croatia’s first concert prima donna and an early performer of the patriotic song “Još Hrvatska ni propala”. Above the village, the protected landscape of Mali Kalnik combines woodland, rocky outcrops, the remains of a hilltop stronghold and views across the Kalnik ridge. A marked hiking route runs from Gornja Rijeka through the Šokot ravine and Križni kamen to Mali Kalnik; the official trail plan gives its length as 5.6 kilometres and walking time as roughly three hours. A shorter marked connection from Gornja Rijeka to the Mali Kalnik junction measures 4.3 kilometres and takes about 90 minutes. Nearby Vojnovec contributes vineyard lanes, traditional wine huts and small chapels, making Gornja Rijeka a natural base for exploring western Kalnik on foot.

Gornja Rijeka is a municipal centre on the western slopes of Kalnik, below 429-metre Mali Kalnik and 20 kilometres northwest of Križevci. The settlement was formerly called Reka, while the older regional name, Mali Kalnik or Kys Kemlek, is first recorded in 1240. Its defining landmark is Erdödy–Rubido Castle, a Renaissance residence completed in 1663 on the site of an older manor by Vladislav Orehoczy the Younger. Sidonija Erdödy Rubido, Croatia’s first opera singer, lived at the castle; tradition places the first performance of the Croatian anthem in its northern tower, accompanied by Josip Runjanin. The Parish Church of the Assumption has a Gothic bell tower and a presbytery dating from 1765, connecting the castle to the village’s historic core.

Practical information

Getting there and around

The road approach to Gornja Rijeka comes from Križevci towards western Kalnik and continues towards Vukovec, one of the easiest starting points for Mali Kalnik. The castle and church can be combined on a short walk through the centre, but a car is more convenient for reaching Šokot, Vojnovec and the various trailheads. Hikers can also start directly in Gornja Rijeka: the officially recorded route to Mali Kalnik through the Šokot ravine covers 5.6 kilometres. The Vojnovec approach passes a local inn, the Obreške kleti wine huts and cemetery chapels before climbing through vineyards towards Kalnik.
