Donja Voća
About this place
Donja Voća is a Zagorje village in Varaždin County whose identity is closely tied to Vindija Cave, about two kilometres from the centre. The elongated cave chamber, roughly 50 metres long, 30 metres wide and ten metres high, preserves archaeological layers extending from the Palaeolithic to the early Middle Ages. Neanderthal remains recovered at Vindija have played a major role in genetic research into the relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans. In the village itself, the parish church of St Martin the Bishop contains frescoes by Ivan Krstitelj Ranger and the Pauline school of painting. Above it, within a stone enclosure, stands the medieval and later Baroque-remodelled chapel of St Thomas the Apostle. The local story continues at the Virtual Zagorje House, whose digital displays evoke about a century of life in Voća, and at the Croatian Veterans Sports Park with football, beach volleyball and children’s facilities. Hilly roads and woodland tracks lead cyclists past vineyards and old Zagorje houses. As work to secure Vindija’s entrance and improve part of its interior began in 2026, any visit to the cave site should follow the current access arrangements.
Donja Voća grew among the hills of Hrvatsko Zagorje, and its distinctive character combines deep prehistory with Baroque religious art. Vindija Cave, two kilometres west of the settlement at an elevation of about 275 metres, is protected both as a natural monument and as cultural heritage. Its finds span the Palaeolithic through the early Middle Ages and include Neanderthal remains later used in genetic research. The village centre is marked by St Martin the Bishop’s Church and its Ranger frescoes, while the chapel of St Thomas occupies higher ground above it. Vineyards, orchards, scattered hamlets and surviving Zagorje houses give the Voća area a strongly rural, hilly landscape rather than the appearance of a compact town.

Things to do
Start at the Church of St Martin the Bishop and look inside for frescoes associated with Ivan Krstitelj Ranger and the Pauline painting tradition. From there, climb to the chapel of St Thomas the Apostle, a medieval structure later remodelled in the Baroque period and enclosed by a masonry stone wall. The prehistoric part of the route leads towards Vindija Cave, around two kilometres from the centre; because protective works began there in September 2026, access should follow the official instructions displayed locally. For a view of more recent village life, continue to the Virtual Zagorje House, then finish with a bicycle ride along Voća’s roads and woodland tracks or a stop at the Croatian Veterans Sports Park.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Donja Voća occupies the hilly western part of Varaždin County, with sights spread between the village centre, higher hamlets and Vindija Cave two kilometres to the west. A car or bicycle is therefore the most practical way to connect St Martin’s Church, the chapel of St Thomas, the Virtual Zagorje House and the approach to the cave area. Local roads and woodland tracks suit cyclists, although the climbs and occasional unpaved stretches call for suitable equipment. The municipal office at Donja Voća 26C provides a useful central reference point for navigating the settlement. As protective work around Vindija’s entrance is taking place in 2026, the final approach should be planned according to temporary signs and access arrangements on the ground.
