Doljani
About this place
Doljani is one of the nine settlements administered by the Town of Daruvar in Bjelovar-Bilogora County. Croatia’s 2021 census records 655 residents, 258 households and 350 housing units in the settlement. Daruvar’s municipal documents list Doljani as its own local committee, alongside Daruvarski Vinogradi, Donji Daruvar, Gornji Daruvar and the town’s other settlements. Older statistical records used the name Doljani Podborski from 1910 to 1981. That suffix connects the village with Podborje, the older regional name that also survived in names of nearby settlements after Daruvar acquired its present name. A scholarly study of Orthodox parishes in the Daruvar area includes Doljani among the places whose settlement history can be traced from the late seventeenth through the eighteenth century. Doljani’s present-day identity is therefore more than its closeness to Daruvar: it is also expressed through its local committee, the historic Podborski name and a long, documented settlement history.

Things to do
Make the Church of St Elijah the focus of a short visit to Doljani: this protected monument was built in 1804 on the site of an earlier wooden church. Its Classical exterior is distinguished by a two-storey bell tower, pyramidal roof and rounded apse, while the interior retains a timber barrel vault and an iconostasis with objects dating from the late 18th and 19th centuries. Continue in nearby Daruvar, where the village church can be viewed alongside the 1756 Church of the 318 God-bearing Fathers and the distinctive domed Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1764.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Drivers reach Doljani from the west via Daruvar and the D5 state-road corridor, while county road Ž3172 continues through the village towards Sirač. For passengers without a car, county public-service bus route 34 runs along the Daruvar–Doljani–Kip corridor and lists Doljani as its own stop. Local railway line L204 serves Daruvar rather than Doljani, so the final stage from Daruvar station must be made by road. In practice, Daruvar is therefore the main transport gateway for reaching the village.
