Breznički Hum
About this place
Breznički Hum is a small municipal centre in the hilly part of Varaždin County, positioned beside the D3 state road and its namesake interchange on the A4 motorway. The Church of St Martin anchors the village, while the Lonja River and surrounding hills shape its landscape. Its most unusual feature stands near the northern entrance: a reused fragment of a Roman sarcophagus known as Pan’s Spring, carved with a head bearing ram-like horns. A 22-metre, three-arched stone bridge crosses the Lonja and is recorded as built heritage, although its construction date remains uncertain. The village’s former importance to travellers survives in the story of the Cr(k)vena oštarija, once an inn, shop and postal-coach stop on the Varaždin–Zagreb road. The buildings have disappeared, but their postal horn and old water pump inspired elements of the municipal coat of arms. Breznički Hum consequently makes an intriguing short stop between Zagreb, Novi Marof and Varaždin.
The word Hum reflects the village’s elevated, hilly setting, while historical records mention the Hum estate and the Humski noble family during the 16th and 17th centuries. The settlement grew beside the old Zagreb–Varaždin route used by postal travellers and pilgrims heading for Marija Bistrica. That roadside past survives in the municipal coat of arms: a postal horn and water pump recall the former Cr(k)vena oštarija coaching complex. Modern Breznički Hum remains recognisable through the D3 and the nearby A4 interchange, yet the Lonja River and green slopes preserve its distinctly rural character.

Things to do
Start at the Church of St Martin in central Breznički Hum, then seek out Pan’s Spring near the village’s northern approach. Its stone trough is actually a fragment of a Roman sarcophagus carved with a head and ram-like horns. Continue to the 22-metre stone bridge over the Lonja, whose three arches once carried the old Varaždin–Zagreb road. For a broader view of the settlement, head towards the surrounding hills: Humščak, northeast of Gornji Hum, rises to about 370 metres and is recorded as a possible archaeological site, while a locally produced school guide also recommends climbing Molve.
