Nehaj Fortress was erected in 1558 on the hill above Senj under the direction of Captain Ivan Lenković. Its thick walls, numerous loopholes and openings for heavy weapons were designed to defend the town against Ottoman pressure from inland and Venetian threats from the sea. Stone from demolished buildings outside the city walls was reused in its construction. Today the fortress is one of Senj’s defining symbols and contains museum displays devoted to the town and the Uskoks. The upper levels and roof provide broad views over Senj, the Kvarner coast and nearby islands, combining military history with one of the city’s best panoramas.
