Senj Cathedral of the Assumption developed from a medieval Romanesque church probably dating to the 11th or 12th century. Archaeological finds around the apse and portal also indicate an earlier Early Christian phase. Over the centuries the building was enlarged with side aisles and a sacristy, while notable works include the Gothic tomb of Bishop Ivan de Cardinalibus and a Renaissance relief of the Holy Trinity. The cathedral suffered severe damage during the bombing of Senj in 1943 and was later restored. It stands within the old town, making it easy to combine with Senj’s squares, surviving fortifications and the uphill route toward Nehaj Fortress.
