Plitvice Lakes became a national park in 1949 and were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979. Their significance lies not only in the colour of the lakes and numerous waterfalls, but in the continuing formation of tufa barriers that dam watercourses and shape the entire cascading system. The park includes the Upper and Lower Lakes, forests, streams and karst terrain. Visits follow marked paths and wooden boardwalks, with combinations of walking, boat transport and panoramic vehicles depending on the chosen route. Sturdy footwear and sufficient time are useful, because the protected area is far larger than the famous chain of lakes alone.
