The Cathedral Church of St Nicholas is Karlovac’s principal Orthodox church and the cathedral of the Eparchy of Gornji Karlovac. The original church was built in the late 18th century as the city’s Orthodox community grew, and its architecture was associated with late-Baroque design. It was badly damaged by mining at the end of 1991 and completely destroyed in 1993. Reconstruction was completed in 2007, restoring the building’s original appearance. The present church is both an active place of worship and a reminder of the long continuity of Karlovac’s Serbian Orthodox community. It is best experienced during a service or while walking through central Karlovac.
