Karlovac’s Franciscan Monastery stands beside Holy Trinity Church on the principal square of the Renaissance Star-shaped town. The Franciscans began building the monastery in 1658; after the great fire of 1692, both church and convent were rebuilt and expanded through the 18th century. The complex consequently brings together Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and later layers. Inside the church, the black-marble high altar installed in 1698 and the painted nave with side chapels are particular highlights. It is a rewarding stop for visitors interested in sacred art and the urban history of Karlovac.
