Gospić’s Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was completed in 1783 as a parish church in a Military Frontier town. Its single nave and elongated plan, with a narrower three-sided sanctuary, make it an example of the standardised 18th-century frontier church type, rare in the Lika borderland settlements. The church was set on fire in September 1991; before a roof could be installed, exposure to rain caused further damage to its interior. On 25 May 2000, when the Diocese of Gospić-Senj was established, it was raised to cathedral status. A memorial plaque on the building commemorates those killed in the 1809 Battle of Bilaj.
